2014 Day 1
2014 Ultraman World Championships Day 1 Race Report
The 30th edition of the Ultraman World Championships started from Kailua bay this morning under gorgeous conditions. The 38 swimmers taking on the 6.2 mile swim were blessed with calm waters, little wind and blue skies.
The first swimmer to emerge from the water on the shores of Keauhou Bay was Craig Percival (Australia, 43) with a time of 2:31:50. Percival had a lead of just over 12 minutes over second place swimmer, Marty Raymond (Canada, 52) with a time of 2:43:04 and third place swimmer and first place female, Julie Shelley (USA, 38) who came in with a time of 2:53:17.
The fourth swimmer of the day was also the second place female, Yasuko Miyazaki (Japan, 37) who completed the 10K distance in a time of 2:57:20 followed by the fifth place finisher and third overall male swim finisher, Tobias Winnemoeller (Germany, 35) who had a 3:02:09 clocking.
All 38 swimmers were able to complete the distance with the final swimmer being Stacey Shand (Canada, 35) who came in at the 5:12:18 mark.
Once out of the water, the athletes mounted their trusty bikes and began the 90 mile ride to Volcano. Again, blue skies were on order for the day although the winds picked up as they passed the South Point area and began the 4000’ foot climb to the finish at Maunale’o Place.
Keeping his solid grip on his first place standing for the day, Percival posted an impressive bike split of 5:33:10 to give him a Day 1 total time of 8:05:00. Making a move from 5th out of the swim to second overall on the day, Winnemoeller clocked a 5:43:04 bike to finish in 8:45:13 on the day. Also, clocking a split of 5:43:04 and making a huge move up the field was Tony O’Keefe (Canada, 53) for a Day 1 total of 8:49:47 for third overall on the day. He became the first hand-cycle athlete to complete the 90 mile Day 1 bike course in a time of 7:02:45 giving him a total time of 10:23:54 placing him in 15th overall going into Day 2.
Unfortunately, 2 athletes were unable to complete the 90 mile bike section in the 12 hour time limit. Both participants will be allowed to continue the next 2 days.
The Day 2 course of the Ultraman World Championships will start at 6:30am and offers the athletes a scenic 171.4 mile tour from Volcano, through the Puna district, into Hilo and up the Hamakua Coast to Waimea. The final section is over Kohala Mountain Road finishing at Kamehameha Park in Kapa’au.
