Entering Ultraman because: I love UM HI! No where else in the world can you go to hell in a race (physically/emotionally/mentally) in absolute paradise. I do ultra-distance sports to push myself beyond what I think is possible, and to inspire those around me to do more and be active. Having the added benefit of friends and family for support is incredible. Just the other day I got my Ultraman Tattoo, and underneath I got the Bible Verse 2 Cor. 12:10, which states: “That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am WEAK, then I am STRONG.” That is so true in this race — you get broken down to nothing, only to leave the island stronger than before. Going through ultra races makes everyday life that much easier.

Entering Ultraman because: I do ultra distance sports to feed my soul. To see what I am capable of and continue learning how me and my fellow human beings are wired, so that we can realize our full potential. When I am training for goals like this, I find I am at my best because Iam growing, learning and becoming better every day. This also translates to the rest of my life and what I am able to give to others who are looking for the answers to the same questions. This is universal and I love helping others find their path to their true potential and empowering them to take it.

Entering Ultraman because: I can’t really explain it is the honest answer to such a simple question. I think it has more to do with what the Ultraman is in and of it self, and not so much about me, or what I want. I can honestly say that participating in UMFL 2014 was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life, but at the same time the most rewarding. What shocks me the most is that I still can’t grasp its full impact on me, or find the words to really describe it. The reason may well be because the Ultraman is deeply contradictory.Contradictory because it was supposed to be a race, and in races you are out for yourself, the other athletes are your opponents, and opponents are to be defeated. But this is the Ultraman, as much a race as any other, but also a journey that you share with your best buddies. Contradictory because it was supposed to be physical, we are swimming, biking and running for hours on end. But this is the Ultraman, and the physical is as important as the spiritual. Believing I could go on when my body was aching, and my ankle was swollen like a tennis ball, or pushing just a bit harder when sanity was telling me to stop. Contradictory because I smiled even when I cried. It happened a couple of times, but the most touching was when one of the crews offered me water and my crew was nowhere to be found. A simple gesture for sure, but in the isolation of the road, the eerie fog and the rain, one that was deeply touching. Not only for a body that needed H2O, but also for a mind that craved for human contact. This is the Ultraman, a crew that should be there to support your competitors, to make sure they best you, but selflessly cares and cheers for you just as hard, and just as passionately. This is the Ultraman, a war of opposing emotions, of extreme pain and extreme bliss. It will find your weakness and you will find your strength.
Why do I want to do it? How could I not want to do something that brings out the best in me?

It was a humbling experience and gave me a greater perspective on ones own achievements and of others around me. Ultraman epitomises all the challenges and expectations that I relish in sports and showed me the true essence of reliance on others to achieve ones own goals.
