2014 Ultraman World Championships Day 3 and Final Race Report

The soggy conditions that the athletes faced on Day 2 were replaced with continued windy conditions and blazing sun.   The competition on the run was as hot as the temperatures

Defending overall champion, Miro Kregar (Slovenia, 52) ran a blistering 6:27:30 for the double marathon to win the run portion of the event and move into fourth in the overall standings for the three days with a 24:18:48. Tobias Winnemoeller (Germany, 35) burnt up the course with a 6:41:58 clocking to finish second on the day and overcome the 54 minute deficit he faced coming into the third stage. Winnemoeller finished first overall with a total time of 23:28:14. Craig Percival (Australia, 43) who had been the leader on the first two days ran a 7:41:45, 7th on the day, to take second overall with a combined time of 23:34:00. Tony O’Keeffe was third place finisher on the day with a 6:46:41 run and also held the third position overall with a three day total of 23:44:29. The last spot in the top five overall men’s standings went to Peter Kotland (Czech Republic, 42) who finished 6th on the run section by clocking a 7:33:25 to total out his 3 day adventure with a time of 24:27:52.

Andre Kajlich was also burning up the run course. Kajlich chose to use an everyday wheelchair rather than a racing chair so as not to have “an unfair advantage over the other athletes. Kajlich became the first hand-cycle athlete to complete the Ultraman World Championships course by rolling to a run time of 6:49:31 for a combined time of 26:41:55.

The real hot competition was in the women’s field where Yasuko Miyazaki (Japan, 37) ran a new course record time of 6:54:57 becoming the first woman to go under 7 hours on the 52.4 mile course at the Ultraman World Championships. This incredible performance rocketed Miyazaki into first place woman overall with at total time of 25:40:49. Meredith Terranova (USA, 40) posted the second fastest run time for the women with a time of 8:09:40 for a three-day total of 29:09:00. Julie Shelley (USA, 38) who had been the women’s leader going into the run posted a third best on the day 8:11:03 to claim the second spot on the women’s podium with a total time of 26:30:45. Rounding out the top three overall in the women’s field was Kathy Winkler (USA, 48) who ran a 8:40:43 to acquire a total time of 27:17:36.was Kathy Winkler (USA, 48) who ran a 8:40:43 to acquire a total time of 27:17:36.

At the 12 hour cut-off mark, there were 34 official finishers and 4 people that were unable to complete the event. Overall, the 30th edition of the Ultraman World Championships was an incredible individual journey with all the athletes, crews and staff getting to bask in the founding principles of the event—Aloha, Ohana, Kokua.
